I recently got to spend a couple of days with my lovely daughter in New York City. We visited museums, Central Park, and Top of the Rock.

While on the trip I began thinking about Henry Wallace, the Third-Party candidate who ran to Harry S. Truman’s left. Wallace was a former Democratic Vice President, received his nomination from the American Labor Party, and finished in third place with 8.25 percent of the vote in the Presidential election of 1948.

The 1948 election created one of the most memorable, incorrect headlines in the media’s history when the Chicago Tribune mistakenly published a story that said Truman lost to Republican opponent Thomas E. Dewey.

The headline from the Chicago Tribune read, “Dewey Defeats Truman.”
