Getting Justice for Elmiron Victims
Have you or a loved one been impacted by Elmiron?
Burger Law represents individuals who have suffered major side effects after taking the medication Elmiron and wish to pursue a lawsuit. A complaint was filed in May of 2020 regarding the adverse effects of the drug Elmiron, a drug often prescribed for internal cystitis (chronic bladder pressure or bladder pain). There is evidence that the drug can cause permanent vision damage. Many people who have taken Elmiron for “painful bladder syndrome” have experienced retinal pigmentary maculopathy (retinal damage), hair loss, headaches, skin rashes, sleep disorders, and other symptoms.

What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is an FDA-approved medication taken daily and used to treat the pain and discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic bladder syndrome that affects millions of Americans each year. This oral medication is a pain reliever and blood thinner that is used by both men and women suffering from the symptoms of IC, though the condition is more common among women.
Also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), this drug is meant to create a thin layer in the wall of the drug-taker’s bladder in order to protect against the irritating and harmful substances found in urine from IC.
Elmiron has been on the market and prescribed long-term to people across the U.S. since the 1990s.
If you have taken Elmiron and are experiencing vision symptoms such as those related to macular degeneration, you could be eligible for filing an Elmiron lawsuit. Get in touch with an Elmiron vision loss lawyer at Burger Law now to learn more.
Adverse Side Effects and Symptoms of Elmiron
Research suggests that Elmiron has caused patients to develop an eye disease called retinal pigmentary maculopathy. This condition is closely related to and often misdiagnosed as macular degeneration. While each patient has a unique experience of symptoms, conditions of retinal pigmentary maculopathy often include:
- The capillaries and small blood vessels around the macula becoming abnormal
- Deposits (round, yellowish lesions) forming underneath the macula
- Retinal pigment epithelium atrophy, which is a common symptom of age-related macular degeneration.
The symptoms that result from these conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Gradual vision loss or impairment
- Blurred vision
- Image distortion (objects appearing deformed, distorted, or small)
- Dark spots in the field of vision
- Difficulty with focusing eyesight and adjusting to dark or dim lighting
- Halo vision
- Reduced night vision
- Muted or less vivid colors
- Difficulty reading
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek help from a doctor as soon as possible. A trained physician can provide critical medical treatment, and documentation of treatment and/or diagnosis of retinal pigmentary maculopathy, degenerative maculopathy, macular/pattern dystrophy, metamorphopsia, retinopathy, scotoma, or other associated eye condition will strengthen your case.
Once you begin receiving the proper medical care, Burger Law’s Elmiron lawyers can begin our work representing your claim and pursuing monetary damages, which can include medical bills, pain and suffering, lost income, and more.
Elmiron Lawsuit: Do I have a Case?
Patients who were prescribed Elmiron and developed vision problems are seeking justice from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the drug’s manufacturer. Plaintiffs are accusing the conglomerate of continuing to design, market, and distribute the drug with full knowledge of the significant risks while failing to disclose these risks to the public.
Our personal injury lawyers in St. Louis are now reviewing cases from people who took Elmiron for at least two years and suffered vision problems. If you began experiencing vision problems while taking or within a year of taking Elmiron, especially between 2018 and the present, we want to hear from you.
