What is Prilosec/Nexium?

If you’ve ever had heartburn or acid reflux, chances are, you’ve heard of two of the most popular over-the-counter PPIs on the market, Nexium and Prilosec. PPIs are designed to decrease the level of acid that’s made by proton pumps, and are considered on of the most effective acid reflux/heartburn treatments. However, since PPIs were put on the market in 1981, more and more dangerous side effects have been found, such as an increased risk of pneumonia, irregular heartbeat, kidney disease and failure, and, most recently, pancreatic cancer.

Symptoms of Prilosec/Nexium-related Pancreatic Cancer

According to a medical study published in 2017, the risk of PPI-related pancreatic cancer is a growing concern. Daily users of PPIs such as Nexium and Prilosec are 10 times more likely than other individuals to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after taking the heartburn drugs. Symptoms of PPI-related pancreatic cancer include:

  • Jaundice – yellowing of the eyes and skin
  • Stomach or Back Pain – pancreatic cancer causes the pancrease to expand and press on nearby organs
  • Weight Loss or Loss of Appetite – sudden weight loss or a rapid decrease in appetite is one of the most common symptoms associated with pancreatic cancer
  • Nausea or Vomiting – an inflamed pancreas can press on the stomach, partially blocking it, which makes it difficult for food to get through, resulting in severe nausea or vomiting

If you’ve noticed any of the above symptoms, or have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after taking Prilosec, Nexium, or another prescription antacid medication, you need to talk to a PPI pancreatic cancer lawsuit lawyer about your case and see if you’re eligible for compensation.

In 2016, a medical study of 80,000+ patients showed that the use of PPIs was associated with a significant increase in gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer. According to the study, when antacids such as Prilosec and Nexium reduce the production of stomach acid, they stimulate a powerful growth hormone, gastrin, which can encourage cell hyperplasia that often progresses into cancer.

Federal law requires drug manufacturers to include risks and warnings on product packaging, but outside of this, there aren’t currently any other measures being taken by the FDA to protect PPI users from gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancers. As such, as of January 2020, there have been more than 15,000 lawsuits filed against Prilosec, Nexium, and other prescription antacid manufacturers, and there could be thousands more filed before the trial in September 2020.
