$400,000 Car Accident Settlement

When driving, it is really important to always keep your eyes on the road in front of you. Even if you are on the highway, be prepared for cars to slow down or stop in traffic. It only takes a second of looking down at your phone to be distracted to the point where you cannot avoid causing a serious collision.

Genavieve recently obtained a $400,000 settlement for our client William arising out of a car crash in Jerseyville, Illinois, when he was hit head-on and sustained severe injuries to his legs requiring multiple surgeries.

At the time of the accident, William was traveling Southbound on U.S. Highway 67. The at-fault driver, who was traveling Northbound on U.S. 67, failed to realize a car in front of him was stopped waiting to turn. In an attempt to avoid that car, the at-fault driver swerved into oncoming traffic and hit William head-on.

As a result of this violent collision, William essentially pulverized both of his lower legs, breaking his left fibula, left ankle, multiple bones in his left foot, and multiple bones in his right foot. He initially went to Alton Memorial Hospital, but due to the complexity of his injuries, they transferred him to Barnes Jewish Hospital.

The doctors operating out of Barnes first performed surgery on William’s left ankle. They installed hardware, including multiple pins and rods, to secure the foot and ankle bones in place. They installed clamps to keep the hardware secured externally, and immobilized the whole lower leg and foot. This invasive painful procedure was then replicated on the right leg, ankle and foot. Ultimately, William ended up needing multiple surgeries on each foot, including the removal of previously placed hardware.

The at-fault driver only had $100,000 of insurance coverage, which was offered to William. Fortunately, William also had underinsured motorist coverage, and we were able to obtain an additional $300,000 for William as part of an underinsured motorist settlement.
