Exactech Pte Ltd, a corporation that manufactures orthopaedic implants, released a nationwide recall in February 2022 for some of their products, as a mistake in packaging resulted in defects. Many of these joint replacements have been implanted in patients since as early as 1994.
The the insert in question, Exactech Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) knee inserts, are labeled with an eight-year shelf life. However, the inserts often did not last anywhere near that long, leading to pain, stiffness, fractures or even bone loss.
The lifespan of a knee replacement often comes down to the longevity of their polyethylene insert. Typically, inserts are designed, built and packaged to be resistant to oxidation before being inserted into your knee, which is a prominent cause of premature failure. Exactech designed and manufactured their inserts well, and intended to include a layer of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) in the packaging to eliminate the risk of oxidation. However, it was discovered that, for whatever reason, EVOH was not included in the packaging, leaving the inserts prone to oxidation and degeneration. That degeneration can cause significant harm to the patient.
Exactech’s failure to include Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol in the packaging also applies to their ankle inserts. This caused the FDA to announce a Class 2 Device Recall. If you were implanted with a defective ankle replacement, you may need revision surgery, in addition to experiencing immense pain, not to mention the extra medical bills and time spent off work.
There are four components of a hip replacement:
A pair of studies published in 2020, one called Early Polyethylene Failure in a Modern Total Hip Prosthesis: A Note of Caution and another called Early failure of a modern moderately cross-linked polyethylene acetabular liner, both warned consumers that the acetabular liner in Extach’s hip replacements were lasting several years fewer than expected.
Exactech’s Connexion GXL acetabular liners were recalled because of the the risk of edge-loading, which is when the contact point between the acetabular and femoral components are not aligned, leading to them wearing down. The polyethylene acetabular hip liners are prone to the same oxidation as the knee and ankle inserts both before and after implantation. This oxidation also results in rapid degeneration, which necessitates revision surgery, discomfort and numerous other injuries.
{Pre-implementation, the same packaging defects as the ankle and knee replacements allow more oxygen to seep through. The polyethylene acetabular hip liners are prone to oxidation after implantation if the following risk factors are true:
The recall applies to the Exactech hip replacement liner parts listed below:
Not every person implanted with an Exactech hip replacement is able to file a valid lawsuit. In order to be eligible for additional compensation, you must have received the implant no earlier than 2004 and no later than 2021, and you must have experienced harmful side-effects from the defective hip replacement. Our product liability lawyers have the tenacity, knowledge and experience to stand in your corner and not back down until you are fully compensated.
