(314) 500-HURTTragedy struck in the Pevely area of Jefferson County this past Monday, November
23, 2020, when a married couple was killed in an auto accident. The Jefferson County I-55 accident that
killed Leonard Wayne and Rebecca Joyce Byrd was a head-on collision that ultimately involved five vehicles.
The I-55 Pevely accident occurred when a car in one of the northbound lanes suddenly slowed down. A tractor-trailer
was traveling behind this vehicle and was not able to slow down in time, causing a rear-end collision between the
truck and the first vehicle. The semi-truck then hit the side of another northbound vehicle and crashed through the
cable barrier and median, putting the truck on the southbound side of I-55. Still moving, the truck met with the
Byrds’ vehicle, which was traveling south, head-on. The fifth car was struck by the cable barrier after the truck
broke through.
Leondard Wayne Byrd and Rebecca Joyce Byrd both lost their lives at the scene of this destructive Pevely I-55
accident. Our hearts go out to the family members and friends of the couple, who had celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary this year.
