It’s been really busy around the office, but sometimes, it’s prudent to pause and reflect on life and legacy.
I have had some friends pass away over the last 6 months or so and am reflecting on mortality. If you are in that
place and want a good book, check out Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande. Rather than the sadness
and loss of death, I focus on how that inspires us to live.
My friend Rich Torack sadly died too soon.
On Friday, April 7th, I was on hand at the St Louis City Municipal Court for a special dedication ceremony.
The Court honored the late Judge Richard M Torack, Jr. by naming a courtroom in his honor. Judge Torack
served this community for over 35 years, and dedicated his life in public service to the fair application of
Justice here in St Louis. He will truly be missed in the halls of this courthouse, but his legacy will live
on.
Working with people like Judge Torack continues to inspire me to pursue justice for my clients.
When I represent families in death cases against the negligent party that broke safety rules and killed the
deceased, it gives me the opportunity to talk with them about grief and loss.
When we litigate these cases, it’s trying to say the least. I get into the legacy of the deceased and present
the loss of companionship experienced by the family.
Another great book for trying wrongful death lawsuits is Grief and Loss.
Its hard to deal with these emotions in the courtroom, but juries get it and appreciate the frank discussion of this
part of our lives that we all share. Death walks with us in life.
